It’s been a while since I’ve checked in from the nursing trenches.
And honestly?
That’s probably because things have been… dare I say… smooth. 😂
Work has been settling down a bit lately. This weekend especially has been pretty calm. No major emergencies, no huge problems, no shifts where I’m wondering how I’m going to make it to the end.
Just… work.
Residents are doing their thing. Staff are doing their thing. I’m doing my thing.
And I’ll take it.
Summer is almost over, which feels completely wrong because I swear it just started. But maybe the end of summer is bringing a little calm with it.
I’m not complaining.
Actually, let me knock on some wood real quick. 😂
Because tonight is a little different.
Tonight is my FIRST overnight.
And so far?
It’s been a breeze.
Now, before we get too excited, I am only about 90 minutes in. 😂
So there is plenty of time for the healthcare gods to remind me who is actually in charge.
But so far, I’m realizing that overnight really isn’t all that different from working during the day.
It’s basically the same job…
Just at night.
And instead of one unit?
I have THREE. 😭😂
Because apparently my first overnight needed a little spice.
But honestly, it hasn’t been bad.
I’m finding my rhythm. I’m figuring out how things flow. I’m learning what overnight looks like and getting a feel for how to manage three units instead of one.
And you know what?
I think I’m going to be okay.
There will probably be hiccups.
There always are.
But when they come, we’ll deal with them.
When they approach.
Not before.
And that’s probably the biggest thing I’m trying to remind myself tonight.
I don’t need to worry about what might happen.
I don’t need to mentally prepare for every possible scenario.
Right now, everything is okay.
The weekend has been calm.
Tonight has been calm.
I’m 90 minutes into my first overnight and I haven’t spontaneously combusted. 😂
So for right now…
I’m soaking this in.
Because sometimes nursing doesn’t have to be chaotic.
Sometimes the shift can just… shift.
No drama.
No major emergencies.
No running around like the building is on fire.
Just a quiet night, three units, and me figuring it out as I go.
And honestly?
I’ll take it. 🙌🏽
Let’s just not jinx it. 👀😂
